Among the many theories of “affinity-based culture”, the most influential and earliest proposed is Professor Lin Qitan’s theory of the “Five Affinities” culture. However, Lin’s framework still leaves room for further refinement. By conducting a detailed analysis of the nature of social relationships, the “Five Affinities” culture can be reclassified into five types—kinship affinity, geographical affinity, occupational affinity, mentorship affinity, and aspirational affinity—along with two forms—emotional affinity and interest-based affinity—and three developmental stages: primary, secondary, and regenerated.
