‘이웃 사랑’을 명령하는 구절 간의 비교 연구: 구약, 제2성전기 문헌, 갈라디아서를 중심으로

A Comparative Study on the Verses that Command ‘Love of Neighbor’: Concentrating on the Old Testament, the Second Temple Literature, and Galatians

본고는 ‘이웃 사랑’을 명하는 구약 성경의 레위기 19:18과 이를 참고한 제2성전기의 문헌과 신약 성경의 갈라디아서 5:14을 여섯 가지의 비교 수단으로 분석한다. 바울은 갈라디아서 5장 13-14절에서 ‘이웃 사랑’을 강조하며 서신의 윤리적 가르침을 시작했다. 바울은 특히 14절에서 레위기의 ‘이웃 사랑’을 인용하며 이 명령 안에서 모든 법이 이루어짐을 강조했다. 바울의 이 같은 진술은 상당히 모호한데, 이 때문에 갈라디아서 5:14은 신약 성경에서 해석하기가 상당히 까다로운 본문 중 하나로 여겨진다. 한편, 제2성전기 시대에 작성된 일부 문헌(Sir 13:15; CD 6:20-21; Jub. 35:20; Virt. 103-4)도 레위기의 ‘이웃 사랑’을 참고했다. 하지만 학자들은 대체로 갈라디아서 5:14의 의미를 밝힘에 있어서 레위기의 ‘이웃 사랑’과 제2성전기의 ‘이웃 사랑’을 함께 고려하지 않았다. 따라서 본고는 이 같은 기존 연구에 존재하는 간극을 메우기 위해 레위기의 ‘이웃 사랑’과 이를 참고한 제2성전기 문헌과 갈라디아서의 ‘이웃 사랑’을 비교하고자 한다. 이를 통해, 본고는 갈라디아서의 ‘이웃 사랑’과 다른 비교 대상 문헌 사이에 일부 공통점이 발견되지만 차이점이 더 두드러짐을 강조하고자 한다. 이를 통해 본고는 갈라디아서 5:14의 진정한 의미를 조명해 보고자 한다.

This paper conducts the comparative analysis of Leviticus 19:18 in the Old Testament, which commands addressees to love their neighbor, and Galatians 5:14 in the New Testament, as well as the Second Temple writings that allude to the love of neighbor at Leviticus 19:18 by six means of comparison. Paul began his ethical instructions in Galatians 5:13-14 by highlighting ‘love of neighbor.’ Paul specifically quoted ‘love of neighbor’ from Leviticus in Galatians 5:14 and emphasized that all laws are fulfilled in this commandment. Paul’s statement here is quite vague, which is why Galatians 5:14 is considered one of the elusive conundrums of the New Testament. Meanwhile, some literature written during the Second Temple period(Sir 13:15; CD 6:20-21; Jub. 35:20; Virt. 103-4) also referenced the ‘love of neighbor’ in Leviticus. Scholars, however, have largely failed to consider the ‘love of neighbor’ in Leviticus and in the Second Temple writings in their endeavor to identify the meaning of Galatians 5:14. Therefore, in order to fill in the gaps in the existing research, this paper will compare the ‘love of neighbor’ in Leviticus with the ‘love of neighbor’ in the Second Temple writings and the ‘love of neighbor’ in Galatians. In doing so, this paper aims to shed light on the true meaning of Galatians 5:14 mainly by revealing that while some similarities are found between Galatians’ ‘love of neighbor’ and other comparanda, the differences are more pronounced.
