A Study on the Theological Outlines of William Perkins as Presented in His Golden Chain

윌리엄 퍼킨스는 “청교도주의의 아버지 내지 원조”로 불리지만, 존 오웬이나 존 번연과 같은 청교도들과 비교했을 때에 한국내에서는 큰 관심의 대상이 되지를 못해왔다. 최근에 퍼킨스 전집 번역이 시작되었고, 그의 신학에 관한 여러 논문들이 공표되고 있는 것은 만시지탄의 감이 있지만 바람직한 현상이라고 생각된다. 본고에서는 윌리엄 퍼킨스의 주요 교의학적 저술인 『황금 사슬: 신학의 개요』의 배경과 주요 내용을 분석하고 평가하는 작업을 수행해 보았다. 먼저 II에서는 퍼킨스의 생애와 공적인 활동을 개관하되 본서의 저술 배경 연구의 관점에서 고찰해 보았다. 그가 로렌스 채더튼의 영향하에 신학 수업을 했고, 또한 라무스주의를 방법론으로 배우고 익혔으며, 영국 국교회에 저항하기 보다는 순응하면서 신학생들 교육과 강해설교에 치중하는 삶을 살았다는 것을 확인해 보았다. III에서는 『황금 사슬: 신학의 개요』의 주요 내용을 분석 개관해 보았다. 황금 사슬이라는 표현대로 본서는 기본적으로 선택과 유기라는 주제가 틀로서 작용하고 있다는 점과 그럼에도 불구하고 신학의 주요 주제들을 적절한 장소에 포함시켜서 개관해 주고 있다는 점도 분명하다. 따라서 퍼킨스의 『황금 사슬: 신학의 개요』는 한편으로는 그의 예정론을 담고 있으며, 다른 한편으로는 그의 청교도 신학의 개요가 담겨있다고 말할 수가 있다. 주제는 분명히 신학적인 성격을 가지고 있음에도 불구하고, 본서는 퍼킨스의 목회적이고 실천적인 관심사가 저변에 작용하고 있다는 것도 본서의 특징이라고 할 것이다.

William Perkins is called the “father or originator of Puritanism,” but compared to Puritans such as John Owen or John Bunyan, he has not been the subject of much interest in Korea. Recently, the translation of Perkins’ complete works has begun, and several papers on his theology have been published, which I think is a desirable phenomenon, although it is somewhat regrettable. In this paper, I analyzed and evaluated the background and main contents of William Perkins’ major theological work, Golden Chain: An Outline of Theology. First, in section II, I reviewed Perkins’ life and public activities from the perspective of the study of the background of the writing of this book. I confirmed that he had been taught theology under the influence of Laurence Chaderton and learned and practiced Ramism as his methodology. And he lived a life focused on educating seminarians and preaching expository sermons while conforming to the Church of England rather than resisting it. In Section III, I analyzed and summarized the main contents of Golden Chain: An Outline of Theology. As the expression “The Golden Chain” suggests, this book basically operates on the theme of election and reprobation, and yet it also clearly provides an overview by including major theological themes in appropriate places. Therefore, it can be said that Perkins' Golden Chain: An Outline of Theology contains his doctrine of predestination on the one hand, and an outline of his Puritan theology on the other. Although the theme is clearly theological, it is also characteristic of this book that Perkins' pastoral and practical interests are at work at the bottom.
