Puritan and Public Theology - The aspects and implications of Richard Baxter’s Public Theology

본 연구는 리처드 백스터의 공공신학적 면모와 현대에 주는 시사점을 제시한다. 연구의 목적은 첫째, “공공신학”이라는 용어는 최근에 등장했지만, 그 내용과 가르침은 청교도에게 이미 존재했음을 논증하는 것이다. 둘째, 백스터의 저작에 나타난 공공신학적 논의를 확인함으로써 첫 번째 주장의 근거를 확보하는 것이다. 셋째, 백스터의 논의에서 공적 신뢰를 잃어가는 한국교회를 향한 시사점을 추출하는 것이다. 백스터 당대 영국 내전 및 비국교도 목사 2천 명에 대한 추방령은 오늘날 한국교회의 감소와 정치·사회적 격동과 닮아있다. 『참 목자상』으로 알려진 백스터는 설교와 교리교육과 심방에 매진하면서도 교회의 공적 책임과 ‘공공선’을 강조하였다. 백스터의 공공신학 연구는 공적 신뢰를 잃어 고립되고 지탄의 대상이 된 한국교회에 유의미한 지침이 될 것이다. 청교도 보수주의자로서 교회의 하나됨과 정치적 갈등의 중재에 힘썼던 백스터의 역할은 이념, 세대, 계층, 지역 등으로 양극화된 한국 사회에 시사하는 바가 크다. 나아가 공공신학의 다양한 개념이 혼재하는 이 시대에 백스터의 공공신학에 대한 고찰은 종교개혁과 청교도 전통에 기초한 공공신학 개념을 확립하는데 일조할 것이다. 하나님이 교회사 가운데 남겨 두신 충성된 일꾼과 교회를 통해 세상에 빛과 소망을 주신 것은 위기에 놓인 한국교회에 위로와 함께 책임을 던져준다.

This study presents Richard Baxter’s public theological aspect and its implications for the modern society. First, the purpose of this study is to argue that although the term “public theology” has appeared recently, its content and teachings already existed among the Puritans. Second, it is to corroborate this argument by showing the content and characteristics of Baxter’s public theological discussion. Third, it is to derive implications for the Korean church, which is losing public trust, from Baxter’s discussion. The English Civil War and the ejection of about 2,000 puritan pastors during Baxter’s time are similar to the decline of the Korean church and political and social chaos today. Baxter, known as the “The Reformed Pastor”, emphasized the public responsibility and “common good” of the church while devoted himself to preaching, doctrine education, and home visiting. The study of Baxter’s public theology will provide meaningful guidance to the Korean church, which has lost public trust and become isolated and criticized. As a Puritan conservative, Baxter’s role in the unity of the church and mediation of political conflicts has great implications for Korean society, which is polarized by ideology, generation, class, region, and so on. This study will help establish the concept of public theology based on the Reformation and Puritan tradition, in this era where various concepts of public theology are mixed. God, who gives light and hope to the world through faithful ministers and churches left in church history throws comfort and responsibility into the current Korean church in crisis.
