전쟁의 발발(勃發) 원인: 존 칼빈과 헤르만 바빙크 그리고 한상동을 중심으로

본 논문은 전쟁의 발발(勃發) 원인을 다룬다. 전쟁 발발이 필연인가 아니면 우연인가를 다룰 때, 대부분의 역사학자들은 우연에 무게중심을 둔다. 그레이엄 엘리슨은 투키티데스의 함정을 소개하면서 강대국과 신흥국의 자국을 보호하려는 두려움 때문에 전쟁이 필연적으로 일어난다고 말하지만, 그 전쟁의 필연을 얼마든지 통제할 수 있다는 논지를 편다. 그러나 클라우제비츠나 임용한 등은 전쟁 발발은 우연히 일어나며, 전쟁에서의 승리도 행운에 놓여 있다고 말한다. 우연에 따른 운명론을 따른다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 전쟁의 발발 원인은 세상의 학문에서 찾을 수 없다고 전제한다. 왜냐하면 성경 이외에 그 어떤 곳에서도 전쟁의 발발 원인을 말하지 않기 때문이다. 고대 역사가 요세푸스도 전쟁의 발발 원인을 성경의 하나님에게서 찾는다. 칸트도 그의 비판 철학에서 현실의 영역과 초월의 영역을 각각 인정하여 신을 요청했던 것처럼, 형이상학적으로 접근하지 않으면 이 문제는 결코 해결될 수 없다. 그러므로 이 원인을 알기 위해 종교개혁 당시 성경을 가장 잘 해석한 칼빈과 20세기 세계 제1차 대전을 겪었던 개혁신학의 기둥이라 할 수 있는 헤르만 바빙크 그리고 1950년 한국의 6.25 전쟁을 겪었던 고신대학의 설립자 한상동을 중심으로 전쟁의 발발 원인이 어디에 있는지를 논구하고자 한다.

This paper deals with the causes of the outbreak of war. When discussing whether the outbreak of war was inevitable or accidental, most historians place emphasis on coincidence. Introducing Thucytides' Trap, Graham Ellison says that war inevitably occurs due to the fear of powerful and emerging countries protecting their own countries, but he argues that the inevitability of war can be controlled. However, Clausewitz and Lim Yong-han say that the outbreak of war happens by chance and that victory in war also depends on luck. It can be seen as following a fatalism based on chance. Therefore, this paper assumes that the cause of the outbreak of war cannot be found in worldly studies. This is because the cause of the outbreak of war is not mentioned anywhere other than the Bible. The ancient historian Josephus also finds the cause of the outbreak of war in the God of the Bible. Just as Kant also acknowledged the realm of reality and the realm of transcendence in his critical philosophy and requested God, this problem can never be solved unless approached metaphysically. Therefore, in order to understand the cause, we consult Calvin, who best interpreted the Bible during the Reformation, Hermann Bavinck, a pillar of reformed theology who experienced World War I in the 20th century, and Han Sang-dong, the founder of Kosin University, who experienced the Korean War in 1950. I would like to discuss where the cause of the outbreak of war lies.
