A Study on the Dongwha Yakbang Yongyakbogam

Objectives : To verify the application methods of over-the-counter(OTC) medicinals and the commercialization patterns of Korean Medical knowledge during the Japanese occupation period based on literature published in that time. Methods : First, the bibliographical nature of the Donghwa Yakbang Yongyakbogam was determined based on comparison between editions and evaluation of referenced literature. Next, through in-depth analysis according to the table of contents, the characteristic of the text’s medical narrative was analyzed. In addition, the author’s history was examined to better understand the text’s meaning from multiple aspects. Results : The Donghwa Yakbang Yongyakbogam is consisted of contents on efficacy and application methods of medicinals that were manufactured and sold at the Donghwa Yakbang(apothecary). Its contents were structured to enable Korean Medical traditional knowledge fused with modern pharmacological knowledge to be practically applied. The table of contents was made accessible for the general public, while annotation and commentary were supplied to increase practicality. Conclusions : The Donghwa Yakbang Yongyakbogam is a historical artifact that shows the reality of OCT medicinals during the Japanese occupation period. It includes traditional Korean Medical knowledge at a high level while flexibly adapting to the turbulent flow of the times. Its objective not only lies in promotion of medicinals, but in providing information to the public with much needed medical knowledge that was lacking at the time.
