Objectives : This study aims to investigate the properties of Gyeongok-go, one of the most recognized Yang tonifier in Korean Medicine. Methods : Gyeongok-go related contents were searched in the Medical Classics literature throughout history. Based on findings, cause and mechanism of applicable conditions, along with the formula’s medicinal composition were analyzed. Moreover, the principle behind such properties was analyzed using contemporary texts of herbal formula science. Results : Gyeongok-go was found to be used to treat situations of Jing(精) deficiency such as aging, along with consecutive deficiencies in Qi(氣), Blood(血), and Fluid and Humorr(津液). In addition, it helps to resolve various heat and dryness patterns caused by Yin deficiency(陰虛). Shengdihuang(生地黃), the sovereign medicinal in the formula has the effect of nurturing Yin and lowering fire(滋陰降火), while Baimi(白蜜) moistens and supplements the Spleen and Lungs. Rensen(人參) tonifies Qi in the Spleen and Lungs, while Fuling(茯苓) communicates Fluid and Humor. The latter two medicinals also help with smooth movement of the large amount of moisteners used in this formula. Conclusions : Gyeongok-go can treat Jing deficiency, and could be widely applied to conditions such as consumptive disease, coughing, laozhai(勞瘵), wasting thirst, bleeding, etc., that result from damage in the Shen(神), Qi, Fluid and Humor, and Blood that follow Jing damage.
