This essay will examine how classical Arabic poets portrayed black women, considering whether their portrayals stemmed from cultural bias, admiration, or a combination of both. Although racial hierarchies existed in Medieval Arabic literature, counter-narratives also recognized the dignity and contributions of black men/women. By placing classical Arabic poetry within its broader historical context, this study seeks to demonstrate that while black women were often marginalized in literary traditions, their nuanced presence reveals a more diverse representation than is typically acknowledged by many historians and literary critics. Ultimately, the essay aims to enrich the understanding of how classical Arabic poetry reflected and, at times, contested attitudes toward race and beauty in medieval Arab world.
