This study is a hermeneutical analysis of the hymn Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Korean Hymnal No. 210) by 18th-century Anglican minister John Newton (1725-1807). The hymn effectively conveys the gospel message as a condensed sermon, highlighting the privileges enjoyed by the people of Zion, redeemed by Jesus Christ’s atoning work through God’s sovereign election and eternal covenant of grace. It also portrays the ultimate blessings of the consummated Kingdom of God, inspiring courage and hope in Christians living in this world under God’s divine providence. Based on firm Scriptural references, biblical allusions, and metaphors, Newton presented God’s grand redemptive drama as a comprehensive and integrated narrative in this hymn. Moreover, he emphasized the Reformed Doctrine of Grace and consistently maintained a Christological perspective that highlights Jesus Christ as the Savior.
