존 듀이 교사론 탐구 미래: 교사의 역할과 책무

Exploring John Dewey's Teacher Theory: Roles and Responsibilities of Future Teachers

본 연구의 목적은 존 듀이의 교사 이론을 분석하고 교사의 역할과 책임에 대해 논의함으로써 미래 교사에게 주는 시사점을 도출하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 연구자는 먼저 존 듀이의 저서인 나의 교육신조(1897), 학교와 사회(1899), 아동과 커리큘럼(1902), 민주주의와 교육(1916)을 검토하여 ‘학생과 교사’, ‘교과와 교사’, ‘민주주의와 교사’, ‘사회변화와 교사’라는 네 가지 주제를 도출하였다. 그런 다음 듀이의 교사론을 주제에 따라 분석했다. 그리고 분석 결과를 바탕으로 다음과 같은 시사점을 도출하였다. 첫째, 미래의 교사는 정보를 전달하는 역할 대신 학생 조력자, 학습 촉진자, 연구자의 역할을 수행해야 한다. 둘째, 미래의 교사는 학교와 지역사회를 교육적으로 연결하는 ‘중재자’로서 역할을 수행해야 한다. 셋째, 미래의 교사는 민주사회를 만들기 위한 ‘공동체의 지적인 리더’로서의 역할과 책무를 수행해야 한다. 듀이의 교사론은 급격한 사회의 변화로 교육의 본질과 교사의 정체성이 모호해진 상황에서 새로운 사회적 요구에 부응할 수 있는 교사의 역할과 책무를 우리에게 명확히 안내해 준다. 본 연구의 의의는 존 듀이 교사론을 탐구함으로써 변화되는 미래 사회에서 요구되는 교사의 역할과 책무를 논의하고 시사점을 도출하였다는 데에 있다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze John Dewey’s teacher theory and discuss the role and responsibility of teachers to derive implications for future teachers. For this purpose, first, John Dewey’s works, My Creed in Education(1897), School and Society(1899), The Child and the Curriculum(1902), and Democracy and Education(1916), were reviewed. And as a result, four core themes were derived : they are Students and Teachers, Subjects and Teachers, Democracy and Teachers, and Social Change and Teachers. Next, Dewey's teacher theory was analyzed by each topic. Based on the analysis results, the following implications were derived. First, future teachers should play the role of student helpers, guides, curriculum organizers, and researchers, not the role of conveying information. Second, future teachers should play the role of ‘mediators’ who educationally connect schools and society. Third, future teachers should play the role and responsibility of ‘intellectual leaders of the community’ to create a democratic society. Dewey's theory of teachers clearly guides us to the role and responsibility of teachers who can respond to new social demands in a situation where the essence of education and the identity of teachers are ambiguous due to rapid social changes. The significance of this study lies in the fact that by exploring John Dewey's theory of teachers, we discuss the role and responsibility of teachers required in a changing future society and derive implications.
