장 자크 루소의 교육철학, 특히 ‘겪어냄을 통한 학습’ 개념은 성장 과정에서의 고통과 인내의 중요성을 강조한다. 현대 교육이 학생들에게 편안함과 보호를 우선시하는 경향과 달리, 루소는 유년기가 단순한 성인기의 준비 단계가 아니라 그 자체로 의미 있는 시기라고 보았다. 그는 ‘잘 규제된 자유(la liberté bien réglée)’ 개념을 통해 아이들이 현실의 도전을 직접 겪고 극복하는 과정을 통해 자율성과 강인함을 길러야 한다고 주장하였다. 과보호적 양육은 학생들의 독립적 문제 해결 능력을 약화시키고, 작은 어려움에도 쉽게 좌절하는 태도를 유발할 수 있다. 본 연구는 루소의 교육론에서 ‘겪어냄’의 의미를 분석하고, 현대 교육이 이를 어떻게 적용할 수 있는지를 논의한다. 특히, 과보호로 인한 문제를 해결하기 위한 대안적 교육 방향으로, 도전과 난관을 경험할 수 있도록 하는 구조적 교육 방안을 제안한다. 루소의 교육철학을 재조명함으로써 학생들의 자율성, 문제 해결 능력, 정서적 회복력을 기를 수 있는 교육적 접근을 모색하고자 한다.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s educational philosophy, particularly the concept of “learning through enduring experiences,” emphasizes the importance of struggle and perseverance in child development. Contrary to modern educational tendencies that prioritize comfort and protection, Rousseau argued that childhood is not merely a preparatory stage for adulthood but a meaningful phase in itself. He advocated for a well-regulated freedom (la liberté bien réglée), where children encounter and overcome real-world challenges, fostering autonomy and resilience. Overprotection, which prevents children from experiencing hardship, leads to dependency and an inability to cope with adversity. This study examines Rousseau’s perspective on the necessity of enduring experiences in education and how it contributes to the cultivation of self-discipline and independent thinking. The discussion explores the implications of this approach for modern education, particularly in addressing contemporary concerns about overprotective parenting and the lack of resilience among students. By re-evaluating Rousseau’s ideas, this paper proposes an educational framework that incorporates structured challenges to cultivate students’ autonomy, problem-solving skills, and emotional resilience.
