Lady Macbeth’s ‘Gall’ and ‘Sleep-Walking’ in Macbeth

영미어문학 제156호.png

Lady Macbeth, an essential, almost one female main character in Macbeth, shows very strong energy in the first half of the play which deals with the assassination of King Duncan, but looks nearly demented in the second half, which deals with Macbeth's tyranny. Macbeth’s ‘milk of human kindness’ is presented as feminine weakness to Macbeth, implying a lack of masculinity. Lady Macbeth declares to fill her breasts with ‘gall’ to help Macbeth be a King. Lady Macbeth can be said to be her husband’s best and most faithful companion in the process of making him a King, but she loses her status in a patriarchal society as Macbeth does not interact with her in matters related to kingship. As she is isolated from power, her dramatic role in Macbeth is to be predestined for ‘dusty death’. With her ‘gall’ and ‘sleep-walking’, Lady Macbeth is represented as a kind of device that reinforces the tragic fall of the male character, and this once again confirms that women are peripheral and subsidiary beings in Macbeth.
