타인의 고통을 기억하는 글쓰기 - 박완서의 애도 서사와 ｢나의 가장 나종 지니인 것｣

Remembering the Pain of Others through Writing : The Mourning Narrative of Park Wan-suh and “The Most Lowly Thing That Is Mine”

이 글에서는 ｢나의 가장 나종 지니인 것｣(1993)을 중심으로 박완서가 아들을 잃은 개인적 체험을 열사의 어머니라는 사회적 의제와 어떻게 접목하고 있는지에 초점을 맞춰 분석하며, 박완서의 애도 서사가 내포하고 있는 윤리적 함의를 고찰하고자 한다. 1988년에 아들을 잃은 박완서는 열사의 부모들과 고통의 원인은 상이하지만, 아들을 잃은 어머니의 위치에서 타인의 고통을 기억하는 애도의 윤리를 글쓰기로 실천하고자 했다. 죽은 자를 잊지 않되, 그 죽음을 자신의 삶과 언어 속에 재구성하기 위해 고투했던 박완서는 애도의 종결을 지향하지 않았다. 특히 ｢나의 가장 나종 지니인 것｣에서 망각에 저항하는 고집스러운 기억의 태도를 공공적 차원으로 끌어올리는 서사적 전략을 주인공의 수다로 이끌어갔다. ｢나의 가장 나종 지니인 것｣에서 애도는 결코 완결되지 않은 채 일상의 언어 속에 끊임없이 침투하며 살아남은 자가 스스로를 윤리적으로 사유하게 만든다. 박완서는 죽은 자를 우상화하거나 배제하지 않고, 그 부재를 껴안은 채 살아가는 자의 고통을 끝까지 외면하지 않았다. ｢나의 가장 나종 지니인 것｣의 주인공은 피해자에서 기억의 결정자, 애도의 수행자, 삶의 윤리적 주체로 거듭나게 된다. 망각되지 않는 고통과 끝나지 않는 애도는 박완서 문학의 윤리적 원천으로 파악된다.

This paper examines how Park Wan-suh’s short story The Most Lowly Thing That Is Mine (1993) connects her personal loss—the death of her son—with the social discourse surrounding the mothers of martyrs for democracy. In 1988, Park Wan-suh lost her son. Although the cause of her pain differed from that of the parents of the activists who died, she sought to practice an ethics of mourning that remembers the suffering of others through her writing, from the position of a mother who had lost her child. In particular, in The Most Lowly Thing That Is Mine, Park Wan-suh leads the narrative through the protagonist’s chatter, employing a stubborn attitude of memory that resists oblivion and a narrative strategy that elevates personal pain to a public dimension. In this work, mourning is never complete; it constantly permeates everyday language, compelling the survivor to reflect ethically upon themselves. Park Wan-suh neither idolizes nor excludes the dead; instead, she never turns away from the pain of the living who carry the absence of the deceased. The protagonist of The Most Lowly Thing That Is Mine transforms from a victim into the arbiter of memory, the practitioner of mourning, and the ethical subject of life. Unforgettable pain and unending mourning are understood as the ethical foundation of Park Wan-suh’s literature.
