역사 ‘공공화’를 문제화하기: ‘공공역사’ 논의 확장을 위한 한 제언

Problematizing the Publicization of History: Toward a Broader Dialogue in ‘Public History’

본 연구는 공공역사 논의가 역사학 연구에 새로운 지평을 열 잠재성이 있음에 공감하며, 공공역사학의 위치성 제고를 위해 지향해야 할 하나의 연구 방향성을 제안하고자 했다. 이를 위해 그간 한국의 공공역사 논의가 취해 온 방향성의 진전과 한계를 살피며, 특히 역사학적 방법의 강조가 논의의 시작이 아닌 귀결로 향하는 경향이 있음을 드러내었다. 그리고 국외 사례를 참조해 역사학적 방법의 비판적 확장성을 고려하는 방향으로 공공역사학이 위치할 필요가 있음을 강조하고자 했다. 이는 공공역사란 ‘어디에서’, ‘누가 하는’ 무엇인가를 살피게 하는 지칭형 개념에서 벗어나 ‘무엇이 어떻게 역사로서 공공화되는가’와 같은, 성찰과 전망을 가능케 할 동사형 접근에서 가능할 것이다. 본 연구는 이를 바탕으로 서구 역사학계에서의 역사 쟁점 생성 여정과 사람들의 역사 수행에 관한 논의를 살폈다. 그리고 공공역사학은 역사가 공공화되는 복합적이고 유동적인 과정들을 탐구하면서, 그 과정에서 제기되어야 하는 메타적 쟁점들을 포착하고 연구하면서, 역사 인식의 확장과 변화를 모색하는 실천적 학문으로 자리매김해야 함을 제안했다.

This study proposes a research direction for enhancing the academic positioning of public history by examining the progress and limitations of public history discourse in Korea. It reveals the tendency for discussions to conclude with an emphasis on ‘historical methods’ rather than beginning with them, and emphasizes the need for public history to consider the critical expansiveness of historical methods by drawing on international cases. This would be possible through a verb-oriented approach that moves away from noun-based concepts toward questions such as “how and under what conditions does something become publicized as history.” Based on this framework, this study examined the trajectory of historical issue generation in Western historiography and discussions on people’s historical performances. It proposes that public history should establish itself as a practical academic discipline that explores the complex and fluid processes through which history becomes publicized, capturing meta-level issues and seeking the expansion and transformation of historical understanding.
