메타월드빌딩으로서의 SCP 재단 위키: 미디어 소프트웨어의 탈모방론적 속성을 중심으로

The SCP Foundation Wiki as Meta-Worldbuilding: Focusing on the Post-Mimetic Properties of Media Software

본 연구는 모방론적 월드빌딩과 탈모방론적 월드빌딩의 비교 속에서 후자의 사례로 SCP 재단 위키를 분석하였다. 모방론적 월드빌딩이 현실을 중심에 두고 정합성을 갖춘 하나의 고정된 월드를 구축하는 작업이라면, 탈모방론적 월드빌딩은 현실이 아닌 기호의 조합을 중심에 놓고 계열체가 조립될 수 있는 여러 경우의 수를 테스트하는 시뮬레이션 과정이다. 본 연구는 SCP 재단 위키를 미디어 소프트웨어의 일종인 월드빌딩 소프트웨어로 설정했고, 이에 따라 SCP 재단위키가 지닌 소프트웨어 속성을 중점적으로 탐구하여 SCP 재단만의 고유한 월드빌딩 방식과의 연결고리를 밝혀냈다. 여기서 주요하게 다뤘던 템플릿과 태그는 각각 시뮬레이션에 대한 구조와 경로 기능을 담당했다. 이러한 방식으로 작동하는 SCP 재단의 월드빌딩은 탈모방적 시뮬레이션의 극단을 향해 나아가면서, 일반적인 탈모방론적 월드빌딩과도 구분되는 독특한 형태의 멀티버스를 생산해낸다. SCP 재단은 철저히 비이야기의 확장에 집중하였고, 이에 따라 비이야기를 온전히 담아내지 못하는 작은 월드들이 병렬적으로 증식하여 난립하는 현상이 나타났다. 이 지점에서 본 연구자는 마노비치의 메타미디엄 개념을 월드빌딩에 이식하여 SCP 재단 위키를 재해석하였고, 이로써 메타월드빌딩이라는 개념을 제안했다. 메타월드빌딩은 탈모방론적 월드빌딩의 토대 위에 자생적으로 확장하는 비이야기와 그로부터 구축되는 월드들, 그리고 그러한 영속적 생성의 원동력이 되는 소프트웨어 구조와 문화적 메커니즘까지를 포괄한다.

This study compares mimetic worldbuilding and post-mimetic worldbuilding, using the SCP Foundation Wiki as an example of the latter. While mimetic worldbuilding centers on the real world to construct a single, coherent, and fixed setting, post-mimetic worldbuilding instead focuses on a system of semiotic signs, testing multiple permutations within a simulated environment. In this context, we conceptualize the SCP Foundation Wiki as a form of worldbuilding software —specifically, a type of media software—and explore its software-like properties to reveal how they connect to the Foundation’s unique approach to worldbuilding. The key elements we examine—templates and tags—respectively provide the structural framework and the retrieval mechanisms for post-mimetic simulation of worldbuilding. The SCP Foundation’s approach to worldbuilding pushes post-mimetic simulation to its extreme, resulting in a distinctive multiverse that diverges from normal post-mimetic worldbuilding. By intensely focusing on the expansion of “the grand nonnarrative”, the SCP Foundation inadvertently spawns numerous smaller worlds that fail to fully accommodate these non-narratives, leading to parallel proliferation and fragmentation. At this juncture, we adapt Manovich’s notion of the “meta-medium” to the concept of worldbuilding, reinterpreting the SCP Foundation Wiki and thereby proposing the idea of “meta-worldbuilding.” Meta-worldbuilding encompasses both the post-mimetic foundation and the spontaneously expanding the grand nonnarrative—and the worlds they generate—along with the software structures and cultural mechanisms that drive this ongoing process of creation.
