In this paper, we present a report on the classes for beginner Japanese writing that implements the JIKU method, which aims at stimulating the learners’ creativity. In traditional Japanese writing classes for beginner-level learners, the learners usually relied on the teacher’s feedback, and they thus tended to be passive in classroom activities. However, we successfully stimulated the learners’ interest and helped them to realize the enjoyment of writing through diverse methods for writing activities, including “writing based on the images associated with photos or pictures,” “writing in a quiz format,” and “writing based on the information obtained through interactions among learners”. As a result, the learners became able to compose unique texts reflecting their imagination, and this stimulated the readers’ interest and led the learners to actively participate in the classes. Furthermore, we revealed that the learners are more motivated when they write about their familiar themes or those related to their personal experiences. The JIKU Method was initially regarded as a teaching method for intermediate and advanced learners, but this study shows that it can also be successfully implemented in beginner-level Japanese writing classes.
