Children as Madness, Motherhood as Madness : Furui Yoshikichi’s The Way of the Children

This paper aims to analyze the critical aspects of incorporating ‘children’ and ‘motherhood’ into the 1970s literature, focusing on The Way of the Children (子供たちの道), written by Furui Yoshikichi (古井由吉), known for representing the Introverted Generation. The novel is confined within a ‘sleepwalking state’ as a form of ‘madness.’ The onomatopoeic phrase ‘hooi, hooi,’ which symbolizes ‘sleepwalking state,’ is introduced as a way for the children in the story to merge with one another. In the novel, a clear conflict is established between children and adults, but Nobuko, who embodies both childlike and adult-like motherhood, exists at the boundary between the two. Nobuko moves freely between the extremes of child = beast and adult = human, and can be understood as representing ‘the agency of children.’ This idea directly connects to the dynamism of motherhood, both in its natural and cultural forms. Furui attempts to weave ‘children’ and ‘motherhood’ into the novel as a form of ‘existence’ as it is. In this novel, the ambivalent aspects of ‘childhood’ and ‘motherhood’ are presented as they are.

本稿は、内向の世代とされる古井由吉の「子供たちの道」を中心に、1970年代の文学に「子ども」と「母性」を取り入れた本作の批評性を紐解く試みである。「子供たちの道」という小説は、「狂気」としての「夢遊病状態」に閉じ込められている。このことを象徴する、「ほおい、ほおい」という擬声語は、作中の子ども同士の同化を働きかけるものとして導入されている。子ども対大人という対立構図が設定されている本作において、両者をまたがりつつその境界線上にあるものは、子どもでありながら、なおかつ大人のそれとしての母性を体現する信子である。子ども＝獣と大人＝人間の両極の間を自由に横断する信子の表象を、「エージェンシーとしての子ども」として読むことができる。これはそのまま、自然的かつ文化的な母性そのもののダイナミズムと通じるものである。作者は「子どもたちの道」に、「実存」としての「子ども」と「母性」を書き込もうと試みた。それによって、アンビバレントな様相を含み込んでいる「子ども」と「母性」というものがありのままに呈される。
