The potential for dependence and abuse of medical narcotics has emerged as a serious public health concern worldwide. This study analyzed prescription patterns and factors associated with the volume of medical narcotic prescriptions. Using the Narcotics Information Management System (NIMS) database from 2021 to 2023, we compared the prescription status of various medical narcotics over three years. Prescription volumes were calculated using the defined daily doses for statistical purposes (S-DDD). A multivariate regression model was constructed to identify factors associated with prescription volumes. Prescription volumes for fentanyl (patch) and diazepam declined, while prescription volumes for methylphenidate increased significantly. Diazepam and Zolpidem were more frequently prescribed to females, whereas Methylphenidate was more commonly prescribed to males. Methylphenidate showed the highest prescription volume among teenagers, whereas Fentanyl (patch), Zolpidem, and Diazepam were more frequently prescribed to the elderly. Prescription volumes also varied significantly by region, with higher rates observed in urban areas and specialized healthcare settings. These findings suggest the need to strengthen prescribing guidelines to secure the safe use of Fentanyl (patch), Diazepam, and Zolpidem, especially among the elderly. Furthermore, a prescription management system should be implemented to ensure the safe use of Methylphenidate among adolescents.
