Daniel Bougnoux’s “Pyramid of Signs”: A Diagrammatic Theory Based on “Indexical Sign”

Semiotic Education Studies Vol.2 No.2.png

In his seminal work Introduction aux sciences de la communication, the distinguished French media philosopher Daniel Bougnoux proposes a new theory of information and communication by integrating interdisciplinary approaches, particularly from communication studies and semiotics. Revisiting classical semiotic theory, Bougnoux builds upon Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic model of signs to construct a conceptual framework known as the “Pyramid of Signs”. This hierarchical model places the indexical sign (index) at the base, followed by the iconic sign (icon), and the symbolic sign (symbol) at the top. In 2010, Japanese scholar Kenji Nishi translated Bougnoux’s work into Japanese, introducing it to academic circles in Japan. This paper takes Bougnoux’s “Pyramid of Signs” as its central focus, with particular attention to the foundational level—the indexical sign—and discusses its theoretical significance within the context of the semiotics of communication.
