Semiotic Education Studies Vol.2 No.2.png

The group of left-behind children in overseas Chinese communities is a byproduct of transnational migration by Chinese expatriates. The connection between these children and their hometown not only affects their healthy development and the quality of education in such communities, but also plays a crucial role in enabling their parents to focus on work abroad. This study takes Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province—a key overseas Chinese hometown in China—as a case study. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Symbolic Interactionism, the research examines the status of hometown identity among these children from four dimensions. Based on the current situation and influencing factors, the paper proposes strategies for cultivating and enhancing the sense of hometown identity among left-behind children in overseas Chinese communities.
