스캇(Scott)이 인식한 훈민정음의 기원과 그의 한국어 학습서에 나타난 자모 고찰

A study on Scott’s perception of the origins of Hunminjeongeum and his analysis of consonants and vowels in his Korean language learning book

본 연구는 스캇(1893)의 훈민정음 기원론과 스캇(1887; 1893)의 한국어 자모 제시 방법을 고찰하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 스캇(1893)을 번역하여 훈민정음 기원론을 살펴보았고, 스캇(1887; 1893)을 번역하여 한국어 자모 제시 방법을 살펴보았다. 그러한 결과 스캇(1893)은 훈민정음의 기원을 산스크리트어에 두었다는 것을 알 수 있었고, 스캇(1887; 1893)을 통해 스캇(1887)의 자모는 리델(1881)의 육필본을 스캇(1893)은 리델(1881)의 인쇄본을 참고하였다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 스캇(1887)은 학습서의 틀을 갖춘 최초의 영어권 한국어 학습자를 위한 학습서이며, 후속 연구자에게 큰 영향을 주었음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구의 의의는 비교적 활발히 이루어지지 않고 있는 스캇의 한국어 학습서 연구에 참여하였다는 것과 이 연구가 한국어 역사 교육의 기초 자료가 될 수 있다는 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the etymological theory of Hunminjeongeum by Scott (1893) and the method of presenting Korean characters by Scott (1887, 1893). To achieve this goal, I translated Scott (1893) from its original English into Koreanto investigate the etymological theory of Hunminjeongeum and likewise translated Scott (1887, 1893) to examine his method of presenting Korean characters. As a result, it was found that Scott (1893) attributed the origin of Hunminjeongeum to Sanskrit, and through Scott (1887, 1893), it was revealed that Scott(1887) referenced Ridel’s handwritten font while Scott (1893) consulted Ridel's printed font. Scott (1887) is the first Korean language textbook for English-speaking learners that follows a structured format, and it has been found to have had a significant influence on subsequent researchers. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to the relatively underexplored research on Scott’s Korean language textbook and in its potential to serve as a foundational resource for the history of Korean language education.
