발달장애인의 월경 경험 및 지원 요구 탐색: 당사자, 부모, 교사를 중심으로

Menstrual Experiences and Support Needs of Women with Developmental Disabilities: Perspectives of Individuals, Parents and Teachers

본 연구는 발달장애 여성의 월경 경험이 비장애 여성과는 다른 특수한 어려움을 지닌다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 국내에서는 장애 여성의 월경에 대한 연구가 드물게 이루어지고 있으며, 특히 인지적 제한이 있는 발달장애인의 목소리는 공적 담론에서 거의 다루어지지 않았다. 이에 본 연구는 발달장애 여성의 월경 경험 및 지원 요구에 대해 탐색하고자 발달장애 당사자 및 그들을 지원하는 부모, 특수교사를 대상으로 면담을 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 월경에 대한 인식 및 관점, 월경 관리 현황, 월경 교육 방법, 월경 교육의 어려움, 지원 요구의 5가지 대주제와 16개의 하위 주제를 도출하였다. 주요 결과로는 발달장애인의 월경 관련 정보 이해와 자기 관리에는 개인차가 컸으며, 이들은 월경 주기 관리, 생리대 부착 및 교체 시기 인식과 관련해 어려움을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 교육은 주로 부모나 교사에 의해 이루어졌으며, 체계적인 자료와 교수방법이 부족한 것으로 드러났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 교육 체계 개선 및 가족 지원의 필요성, 월경 용품 지원 및 의료 접근권 보장, 사회적 인식 개선 측면에서 논의를 제시하였다.

This study initiated with the recognition that women with developmental disabilities experience unique challenges with regards to menstruation that differ from those of non-disabled women. In South Korea, research on menstruation among women with disabilities is limited; moreover, the voices of individuals with cognitive limitations have been under-represented in public discourse. To explore their lived experiences and support needs, in-depth interviews were conducted with women with developmental disabilities, parents and special education teachers. From the interview data, five major themes and sixteen subthemes were identified, including perceptions of menstruation, menstrual management practices, educational methods, difficulties in menstrual education, and support needs. Key findings demonstrated significant individual differences in participants’ understanding of menstrual information and their ability to manage menstruation independently. Difficulties were particularly evident in recognizing the menstrual cycle, applying sanitary pads, and identifying appropriate times for pad changes. Education was primarily delivered by parents or teachers; however, this lacked structured materials and effective instructional strategies. Based on these findings, this study highlights the need to improve educational systems and family support, expand access to menstrual products and healthcare services, and promote greater social awareness regarding the menstrual rights of women with developmental disabilities.
