민중의 자기초월과 민주적 가치의 생성 - 안병무와 한스 요아스의 이론적 대화를 중심으로

Self-Transcendence of Minjung and the Genesis of Democratic Values : A Theoretical Dialogue between Byung-Mu Ahn and Hans Joas

이 논문은 2024년 12월 3일 비상계엄 선포로 촉발된 한국 민주주의 위기 상황에서 안병무의 ‘자기초월’ 개념을 한스 요아스의 가치 생성 이론과 비교 분석하여 민중신학의 현대적 의의를 탐구한다. 안병무는 민중이 자신의 한계를 넘어 집단적 연대와 역사적 실천을 통해 새로운 가능성을 창출하는 과정에서 예수사건이 현재화된다고 보았다. 요아스의 자기초월 이론과의 대화를 통해 민중의 자기초월적 저항이 새로운 민주적 가치를 생성하고 신성화하는 메커니즘을 규명하며, 이것이 민주주의 수호를 위한 강력한 동력이 됨을 논증한다. 이를 통해 민중신학이 현재의 민주주의 위기 극복에 기여할 수 있는 실천적 과제를 제시한다.

This paper explores the contemporary significance of Minjung theology by analyzing Byung-Mu Ahn’s concept of ‘self-transcendence’ in comparison with Hans Joas’s theory of value genesis, particularly in the context of the Korean democratic crisis triggered by the martial law declaration on December 3, 2024. Ahn argued that the Jesus event becomes present when Minjung transcends their limitations and creates new possibilities through collective solidarity and historical practice. Through dialogue with Joas’s theory of self-transcendence, this study elucidates the mechanism by which the self-transcendent resistance of Minjung generates and sacralizes new democratic values, demonstrating that this becomes a powerful force for defending democracy. The paper argues that these self-transcendent experiences serve as the source of new democratic values and norms, while the emotional commitment to these values and the experience of ‘sacredness’ through minjung-events as manifestations of the Jesus event provide the driving force for sustained struggle for democracy. This research contributes to understanding how Minjung theology can offer practical tasks for overcoming the current democratic crisis.
