사회적 파급력이 컸던 범행과 이에 대한 사회의 반응을 학습하여 본인의 주장을 과시하고자 이를 답습한 모방범죄의 예방은 어렵다. 이 연구에서는 이러한 범죄 형태를 ‘과시형 모방범죄’라고 정의하고, 관련 이론들을 통해 해당 범죄자들의 심리적 특성 을 분석했다. 연구결과 ‘과시형 모방범죄자’의 심리적 특성은 다음과 같다. 우선 본인의 이념에 일치하는 범죄와 이를 행한 매력 적인 범죄자를 선택한다. 다음으로 모방하려는 범죄사건을 학습하고 범죄자의 출판물과 인터뷰 등에서 공감대를 형성한다. 이후 모방하려는 범죄자들에 대한 사건 보도와 여론의 우호적인 태도에 자신이 실행할 범행의 정당성을 강화한다. 마지막으로 범행이 후 성명서 발표 또는 인터뷰를 통해 본인 범행의 당위성을 주장한다. 과시형 모방범죄는 제3의 동종범죄를 일으키는 원동력이 된다. 이러한 범죄를 예방하기 위해서는 관련된 방송편성 및 언론보도 가이드라인에 대한 사회적 합의가 필요하다. 아울러 관련 범죄의 태동을 사전에 방지하기 위해 사회적 약자에 대한 사회전반의 의식제고가 선결되어야 한다.
It is difficult to prevent copycat crimes that imitate offenses with significant social repercussions to assert one's own claims. This study defines such crimes as ‘Promoting copycat crimes’ and analyzes the psychological characteristics of these criminals through relevant theories. The findings indicate the following psychological traits of Promoting copycat criminals. First, they select crimes that align with their own ideology and choose perpetrators they find appealing. Next, they study the crimes they intend to imitate and develop a sense of empathy through the original perpetrators' publications and interviews. Subsequently, they reinforce the justification for their actions by observing media coverage and public opinion that is favorable toward the original criminals. Finally, after committing their crimes, they assert the legitimacy of their actions through Manifesto or Interviews. Promoting copycat crimes serve as a driving force for further similar crimes. To prevent such offenses, a social consensus on media programming and reporting guidelines is necessary. Additionally, raising public awareness about the vulnerabilities of marginalized groups is a prerequisite for preventing the emergence of such crimes.
