Analysis of Korean Language Textbooks for the Sri Lankan Advanced Level (A/L) Course

본 연구는 스리랑카 Advanced Level 과정의 한국어 교재인 『Advanced Level 한국어 1, 2』를 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 스리랑카 현지 한국어 교육 교재의 효과적인 개선 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 교재 분석은 내용 구성, 문법 항목, 어휘 사용, 삽화 및 사진 등을 중심으로 이루어졌으며, 스리랑카 현지의 학습자와 교수자를 대상으로 한 만족도 조사를 통해 실제 교육 현장에서의 반응을 수집하였다. 분석 결과, 『Advanced Level 한국어 1, 2』는 의사소통 중심의 기능 통합형 교재로서 기본적인 문형 연습에서부터 담화 구성 연습까지 점차 난이도를 높여가며 학습자들의 한국어 능력 향상을 도모하고 있었다. 또한 현지 학습자와 교수자의 교재에 대한 만족도 조사를 실시한 결과 높은 만족도를 보인 교재임을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 문법 및 어휘 설명의 부족과 연습 문제의 단조로움, 일부 삽화의 정보 부족 등 개선이 필요한 부분도 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로, 스리랑카 현지의 학습자들에게 보다 효과적인 한국어 교육을 제공하기 위해 교재의 문법 설명 보완, 다양한 연습 문제 제공, 문화적 맥락을 고려한 삽화 개선 등의 제언을 하였다. 본 연구는 스리랑카 한국어 교육 현장의 교재 개선에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

This study aims to analyze the Korean language textbooks, 『Advanced Level Korean 1, 2』, used in the Advanced Level courses in Sri Lanka. Based on this analysis, we propose some measures for effective improvement in Korean language textbooks in Sri Lanka. The analysis of the textbooks focused on the content structure, grammatical items, vocabulary use, and illustrations and photos. Additionally, a satisfaction survey on the textbooks was conducted with local learners and instructors in Sri Lanka to collect feedback from the actual users. The analysis results showed that 『Advanced Level Korean 1, 2』 are communication-centered and skill integrated and functional textbooks that progressively enhance learners' Korean language skills from making basic sentence patterns to constructing discourses. The satisfaction survey of local learners and instructors confirmed that these textbooks were highly satisfactory. However, areas needing improvement were identified, such as the lack of detailed explanations for grammar and vocabulary, the monotony of practice exercises, and the insufficient information in some illustrations. Based on these analysis, recommendations were made to provide more effective Korean language textbooks to local learners in Sri Lanka, including supplementing grammar explanations, offering various form of exercises, and improving illustrations considering the cultural context. This study is expected to contribute to the improvement of Korean language textbooks in the Sri Lanka.
