조선 후기는 서세동점(西勢東漸)으로 인한 외세의 간섭, 정치적 혼란, 삼정의 문란, 흉년과 민란 등으로 민중의 삶이 극도로 피폐해졌다. 이러한 시대적 배경 속에서 1860년 최제우(1824~1864)는 ‘제세구민(濟世救民)’의 뜻을 품고, 민족적 신앙체인 동학(東學)을 창명(創明)하였다. 동학은 기존 정치체제에 대한 도전으로 간주되어 관의 집요한 탄압을 받았다. 교세가 확산되자 최제우는 결국 체포되어 혹독한 고난의 길, 즉 ‘피체노정(被逮路程)’을 걷게 된다. 피체노정은 최제우가 경주-대구-문경-과천(다시 대구로 이동)으로 이어지는 죄인 호송 경로와 고난의 행적을 말한다. 2024년은 최제우 출세 200주년으로, ‘피체노정’을 추체험하는 동학기행, 웹 다큐멘터리 등 콘텐츠가 제작되었다. 이 과정에서 고지도(古地圖)와 근대·현대 지도자료는 최제우의 행적을 조명하고 피체노정의 원형을 복원하는데 참고자료로 활용되었다. 본 논문은 동학지도자 피체노정 콘텐츠 제작 사례를 통해 동학의 정신가치를 되새겨보고 지속가능한 동학순례노정 콘텐츠 확산 방안을 모색하고자 하였다.
The late Joseon Dynasty was marked by extreme hardship for the populace due to foreign intervention, political turmoil, administrative corruption, famine, and popular uprisings. Against this backdrop, Choe Je-woo(崔濟愚, 1824-1864) founded Donghak (東學) in 1860 with the aim of “saving the world and the people” (濟世救民). Donghak was perceived as a challenge to the established political order and was met with persistent governmental suppression. As the movement spread, Choe Je-woo was ultimately arrested and forced to endure a harsh journey, known as the “Arrest Journey” (被逮路程), which traced a route from Gyeongju to Daegu, Mungyeong, Gwacheon, and back to Daegu. In 2024, marking the 200th anniversary of Choe Je-woo’s birth, various contents such as Donghak pilgrimages and web documentaries were produced to reconstruct and experience this journey. In the process, old maps as well as modern cartographic materials were utilized as references to illuminate Choe Je-woo’s path and restore the original route of his arrest. This paper revisits the spiritual values of Donghak through the case study of content production on Choe Je-woo’s Arrest Journey and seeks strategies for the sustainable dissemination of Donghak pilgrimage content.
