A Quantum Approach to ‘The Dry Salvages’ I-III: A Play of Surface

본 논문은 4차 산업혁명 시대에 부각되는 학제간 통합의 필요성을 다루며, 인문학과 과학의 융합이라는 관점에서 T. S. 엘리엇의 심오한 명상시 ｢드라이 샐베이지즈｣ 제1-3부에 양자이론의 원리를 적용해 보고자 한다. 양자이론을 이해한다고 주장하는 것은 사실상 무지함을 나타내는 것이라는 물리학의 잘 알려진 격언을 무시하고, 양자이론의 여러 측면을 적극적으로 활용한다. 여기에는 양자 중첩, 얽힘, 비국소성, 입자, 파동, 파동함수 붕괴가 포함된다. 양자이론이 암시하는 것처럼 미시적으로 사물을 관찰하려는 시도는 인간의 일상생활과는 동떨어져 있어 거시적인 사물을 관찰하는 뉴턴의 이론과 대조된다. 따라서 뉴턴 이론의 확실성이 현재에도 적용 가능하다는 점을 인정하면서도, 양자이론의 불확정성을 동시에 적용함으로써 인간의 문화생활이 크게 향상되는 동시에 인간과 기계 간의 경쟁이라는 위험도 야기되었다는 점을 부인할 수 없다. 원자 수준에서 인간의 삶을 분석할 때, 우리는 형이상학적 모래성이 무너지는 것을 목격하게 되며, 이는 허구적인 현실에 대한 새로운 반성과 인식을 불러일으킨다.

This paper addresses the emerging necessity for interdisciplinary integration in the current fourth industrial age by applying the principles of quantum theory to T. S. Eliot’s meditative poem, “The Dry Salvages” I-III. In this paper, I attempt to apply the principles of quantum theory while acknowledging that humans, as thinking beings, inevitably engage in epistemological approaches to objects. Ignoring the well-known adage in physics that claiming to understand quantum theory is, in fact, indicative of ignorance, I have forcefully drawn upon several aspects of quantum theory. These include superposition, entanglement, non-locality, uncertainty principle, particles, waves, wave function collapse. The attempt to observe things microscopically, as implied by quantum theory, is detached from everyday human life. Accordingly, it contrasts with Newtonian theory, which observes macroscopic objects. Therefore, while acknowledging that the certainty of Newtonian theory is currently applicable, it cannot be denied that the simultaneous application of the uncertainty of quantum theory has significantly enhanced human cultural life while giving rise to the risk of competition between humans and machines. When analyzing human life at an atomic level, we witness the collapse of metaphysical sandcastles, prompting a renewed awareness of the inauthentic reality.
