본 논문은 전기비평 관점에서 1923-1925년 사이 엘리엇과 울프의 관계를 집중적으로 조명하고 있다. 울프 부부의 호가스출판사에서 출간된 최초 영국판 『황무지』(1923)는 원전비평의 관점에서 엘리엇이 3가지 오류를 뒤늦게 수정했지만, 그와 울프의 문학적 우정이 확연히 정점에 도달한 방증이다. 역으로 『크라이테리언』에 발표된 울프의 ｢과수원에서｣(1923)와 ｢소설의 등장인물｣(1924)은 이들의 끈끈한 문학적 우정의 확실한 증거인 것이다. 나아가 엘리엇의 미흡한 비평 『존 드라이든에의 경의』(1924)가 호가스출판사에서 또 출간된 것은 비평가와 울프 부부 사이의 더욱 강화된 유대의 확연한 지표이다. 한편, 과도한 혼성주 음주로 인한 “선장 엘리엇”의 아픈 육신과 “권태왕”의 부정적인 성격에 대한 울프의 생생한 묘사들은 이들의 가식 없는 관계를 여실히 드러내고 있다. 아울러 극심한 신경쇠약으로 고통받는 비비엔과 절망적으로 간호하는 엘리엇을 위해 의사와 글쓰기 치료법을 울프가 추천하고, 이후 역으로 레너드에게 병든 울프를 위해 엘리엇이 동병상련을 인도적으로 표출하는 데에서 이들은 문학적 우정을 넘어선 가족 관계를 형성하고 있는 듯하다.

The purpose of this paper is to explore, from the perspective of biographical criticism, the relationship between T. S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf during the years 1923-1925. The first English edition of Eliot’s masterpiece The Waste Land (1923) published by the Hogarth Press run by the Woolfs definitely reveals the culmination of their literary friendship, even though from the perspective of textual criticism three mistakes are belatedly revised by the author. Conversely, Woolf’s “In the Orchard” (1923) and “Character in Fiction” (1924) published in The Criterion obviously underline their consolidated literary friendship. Eliot’s defective essays, Homage to John Dryden (1924) published by the Hogarth Press also evidently indicates the further consolidated relationship between the critic and the Woolfs. Meanwhile, Woolf’s vivid delineations of the sickly physique of “Captain Eliot” caused by intemperate liqueurs and the negative personality of “Prince of Bores” assuredly connote their unpretentious relationship. Additionally, the Woolfs’ recommendation of a doctor and the controversial writing therapy for Vivien who severely suffers from neurological disorders and for the hopelessly caring Eliot, and later in turn to Leonard Eliot’s humane expression of his sympathetic concern for the sick Woolf obviously resemble the familial relationship beyond literary friendship.
