Exploring the Crisis and Sustainability of Taekwondo Dojangs in an Era of Population Decline

This study aims to analyze the structural impact of low birth rates and declining school-age population on the Taekwondo training industry in South Korea and to explore sustainable strategies for its future. Utilizing both quantitative data from national statistics and institutional reports, as well as qualitative insights gathered through in-depth interviews with dojang operators and experts, the study provides a multidimensional understanding of current challenges. The findings reveal that Taekwondo dojangs, which have long relied on a youth-centered operational model, are facing critical threats such as a shrinking customer base, high fixed costs, and regional isolation— particularly in small and rural communities. In response, the study identifies key alternatives including the expansion of adult training programs, content diversification, and the need for administrative and policy support. These results suggest the urgent necessity of transforming Taekwondo dojangs into lifelong physical education and community wellness spaces to ensure their sustainability in a changing demographic landscape.
