An Analysis of University Students’ Perceptions of Global Warming Using Content Analysis

Purpose: This study aimed to explore university students' perceptions of global warming and identify their understanding, awareness of countermeasures, practical actions, and educational needs. The findings provide foundational data for developing effective climate change education programs. Methods: A descriptive content analysis was conducted with 120 students from universities in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Gangwon-do. Open-ended questionnaires were used to gather data on students’ conceptualizations of global warming, perceived importance of countermeasures, suggested preventive actions, and educational interests. The responses were categorized and analyzed through content analysis procedures with high inter-coder reliability. Results: Students primarily understood global warming as rising global temperatures and showed moderate awareness of its causes and impacts. They emphasized ecosystem protection, health, and future generations as reasons for climate action. Suggested actions included energy conservation, use of renewable energy, recycling, and policy support. Educational needs focused on scientific understanding, practical eco-friendly practices, and experiential learning. Conclusion: While students displayed a foundational awareness of global warming, there was limited scientific understanding and action readiness. To address this gap, educational interventions should focus on integrating scientific content with real-world applications and participatory learning. These findings offer practical guidance for shaping university-level climate education.
