A Study on the Hangeul Translation of Chinese Medical Texts : On Target Word Selection for Better Translation With a Focus on the Wenrelun

Objectives : This study examines principles and objectives in translating Chinese Medical texts into Hangul and suggests target word selection for a better and more coherent translation. Methods : We systematically argue ways to select target words that follow and allow to achieve the principles and objectives of Hangul translation of Chinese Medical texts. Verification and evaluation processes of selected target words for ‘透’ and ‘白㾦’ from the Wenrelun in terms of universality and expandability was presented. Results : In the case of ‘透’, it was matched with ‘밀다(to push)’ or ‘몰다(to steer)’ when the meaning was closer to ‘邪’·‘毒’, whereas ‘돋아나다(to sprout)’ was matched when the meaning was closer to ‘斑疹’. In the case of ‘白㾦’, it was matched with ‘물집(blister)’. The matching process from selecting the Chinese terminology to translate to final pairing was laid out. Conclusions : The selection and application of ‘translation pairs’ of source and target words can improve convenience and coherence of translation work, contributing to better translation of medical texts. Technology and system that allow platform construction in which members of the Korean Medicine community could share original texts and translation, information on target words, and work together through communication is required.
