A Study on Discussions Related to the Concept of Exterior(表) of Yangming(陽明)

Objectives : This study aims to conduct a literature review on the clinical meaning of the ‘exterior of Yangming’ concept within the Shanghanlun studies done by doctors throughout history. It includes the subclassification of the Yangming disease according to pathologenetic nature and expression along with issues regarding each treatment method. Methods : The arguments of doctors who are understood to have been at the center of the ‘exterior of Yangming’ related controversy such as Zhugong(朱肱), Taojiean(陶節庵), Yujiayan(喩嘉言), and Keqin(柯琴) were examined one by one. Next, the symptom patterns of Yangming illness and treatment methods expressed through the exterior of Yangming concept were contemplated. Results : The ‘exterior of Yangming’ related controversy originated from an interpretation issue on whether exterior symptoms such as chills accompany Yangming disease that show symptoms such as eye pain, dryness in the nose, and inability to lie down. Later the interpretations differed, as a combined disease state of Taiyang and Yangming, or as exterior symptoms of Yangming itself. In this process, new concepts such as ‘Yangming meridian pattern’ or ‘Yangming exterior pattern’ were used while applied treatment differed according to perspective on the symptom pattern. Conclusions : Arguments on the exterior of Yangming is meaningful in that it ultimately allowed for examination of the category in which perspiration as treatment could be used within the diagnostic system of the Shanghanlun. In relation to this study, additional research on the mispagination controvery or the substantiality of the Three-Yang-Three-Yin of the Shanghanlun is required.
