Analysis of Trends in Korean Literacy Research: Through a Systematic Review

Through a systematic literature review, this paper extracts 42 corpus-based ‘literacy survey studies’ and examines the research trends with respect to research period, method, and results. In terms of the research period, the corpus-based research started in 1998 and showed a slow development until 2007, when it began to revitalize with the utilization of the Sejong corpus. In terms of research methods, the types and sizes of corpora utilized in the study of literacy have been changing from small, personal corpora to large, institutional corpora. The determination of literacy has also become more sophisticated, moving from simple comparisons of word frequency in spoken and written corpora to analyses combining frequency comparison and significance testing. As for the results of the survey, the findings of the existing studies tend to be biased towards a few adverbs, endings, and particles with high frequency of use. Based on the results of the trend analysis, this paper suggests future research directions: promoting quantitative studies, considering stylistic diversity, assessing corpus typicality, and applying survey results in education.
