This study originated from observation of phenomena among intermediate Korean language learners during the reading process: misanalysis of grammatical morphemes, difficulty in dictionary look-ups, and unnatural chunking of text. To investigate learners’ grammatical processing during reading activities, a ‘grammar-based reading test’ was designed. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the reading performance of 57 learners revealed various patterns of grammatical decoding corresponding to their grammatical proficiency and reading achievement levels. The ‘low-grammar-low-reading’ group showed misanalysis of grammatical morphemes, low awareness of irregular verbs, and a tendency to read based on lexemes, which resulted in word-level parsing. Learners in the ‘high-grammar-high-reading’ group demonstrated higher recognition of grammatical morphemes and processed text by merging larger meaning units.
