Mapping Research Trends in English Pragmatics within English Education: A Text-Mining Approach

This study investigates the research landscape of English pragmatics in Korean English-education journals by conducting a comprehensive text-mining analysis of 288 article abstracts published between 1985 and 2025. Using word frequency, n-gram, topic modeling, and concordance analyses, the study identifies key lexical patterns, conceptual linkages, and thematic groupings. The findings reveal integrative research trends across semantics, pragmatics, and syntax, along with practice-oriented themes such as politeness strategies, pragmatic transfer, and information structure. Prominent topics including Korean learners' pragmatic competence and semantic-pragmatic inference emerged as interconnected networks, indicating directions for further inquiry. By employing data-driven methods, this study transcends the limitations of qualitative reviews and provides objective insights into scholarly trends and pedagogical implications in English pragmatics research.
