성인 자폐스펙트럼장애인의 위장행동 전략과 문화적 조절 효과에 관한 해석현상학적 연구

An Interpretative Phenomenological Study on Camouflaging Strategies and Cultural Moderators in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder

본 연구는 자폐스펙트럼장애 성인을 대상으로 위장행동을 보상, 가면 쓰기, 동화의 세 전략으로 구분하고 이들 전략이 시간적, 맥락적으로 어떻게 전개되며, 정체성 혼란과 정서적 소진으로 귀결되는지 해석현상학적 분석(IPA)으로 탐색하였다. 성인 ASD 10명을 대상으로 반구조화 심층 면담을 시행하고, IPA 절차와 Corbin과 Strauss(2015)의 지속적 비교 분석법을 병행하여 전략별 주제를 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 세 전략은 상황에 따라 전환, 중첩되며, 초기에는 사회 적응에 기여하나 장기적으로는 정체성 혼란과 심리적 탈진을 유발하는 위장행동의 역설을 나타냈다. 특히 성별과 문화적 맥락은 위장전략의 선택과 심리적 비용을 조절하는 핵심 변수로, 여성과 집단주의 문화에서는 내면화된 부담이 더 크게 나타났다. 본 연구는 위장행동을 단순한 대처가 아닌 구조적, 심리적 고통의 지표로 해석함으로 진단, 상담, 정책 수립에 있어 위장행동을 고려한 통합적 접근의 필요성을 제시하였다.

This study explored camouflaging behaviors in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and classified them as compensation, masking, and assimilation strategies. In-depth interviews with ten adults with ASD, conducted using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) and constant comparative methods, revealed that these strategies changed over time and context. Although initially beneficial to social adaptation, they frequently result in identity confusion and emotional exhaustion. Cultural norms, such as face-saving and conflict avoidance, particularly in collectivist settings, intensify the psychological burden. These findings indicate the importance of diagnostic, clinical, and policy approaches that consider camouflage as a dynamic and culturally mediated phenomenon.
