하드 밥 드러밍의 미학적 특성 - 아트 블래키(Art Blakey) <Kozo’s Waltz>와 <Free for All> 연주 분석을 중심으로

The Aesthetic Characteristics of Hard Bop Drumming : Focused Analysis of Art Blakey’s Performances in 〈Kozo’s Waltz〉 and 〈Free for All〉

본 연구에서는 하드 밥 드러밍의 미학적 구조를 규명하고자 <Kozo’s Waltz>와 <Free for All> 등 하드 밥 드러밍의 대표적 연주를 중심으로 아트 블래키의 드러밍 특성을 분석하였다. 블래키는 하드 밥 양식의 형성과 정착 과정에서 핵심적 역할을 수행한 인물로, 그의 드러밍은 단순한 시간 유지 기능을 넘어 음악의 흐름과 서사를 조직하는 리듬적 주도성의 모델로 평가된다.본 연구는 문헌 고찰과 직접 채보에 기반한 분석을 병행하였으며, 두 곡의 구체적 연주 구간을 중심으로 아트 블래키의 드러밍 특성을 해석적으로 고찰하였다. <Kozo’s Waltz>에서는 드럼 솔로 후반부(32-56마디)에 나타나는 루디멘트 운용과 밀도 조절 방식을 분석하였고, <Free for All>에서는 헤드 파트 전개 과정에서 드러머의 라이드 패턴 구성과 앙상블 내 상호작용 양상을 중점적으로 살펴보았다.이를 통해 하드 밥 드러밍의 형식적 구성 원리와 미학적 요소, 그리고 드러머가 연주 구조 내에서 수행하는 다차원적 역할을 구조적으로 조망하였다. 본 연구는 연주 기반 분석을 통해 재즈 드러밍의 해석 가능성과 표현 주체로서의 드러머 역할에 대한 이해를 확장하는 데 의의를 둔다.

This study aims to examine the aesthetic structure of hard bop drumming, with a focus on analyzing the drumming characteristics of Art Blakey through representative performances such as <Kozo’s Waltz> and <Free for All>. Art Blakey played a pivotal role in the formation and consolidation of the hard bop style, and his drumming is regarded as a model of rhythmic leadership that organizes the flow and narrative of music, transcending the mere function of timekeeping. The research combines literature review and direct transcription-based analysis, specifically focusing on the distinct performance sections of the two tracks to interpret Blakey's drumming traits. In <Kozo’s Waltz>, the analysis concentrates on the use of rudimental techniques and density control in the latter half of the drum solo (bars 32-56). In <Free for All>, the study highlights the drummer's ride cymbal pattern construction and the interaction within the ensemble during the head section development. Through this analysis, the study provides a structural overview of the formal principles and aesthetic elements of hard bop drumming, along with the multidimensional roles that drummers play within the musical structure. The significance of this research lies in its expansion of the interpretative possibilities of jazz drumming and the understanding of the drummer's role as an expressive agent in performance.
