전통의 계보학 - 아트 테이텀과 오스카 피터슨의 재즈 피아니즘에 나타난 스트라이드 스타일과 스케일 어법의 비교 고찰

A Genealogy of Tradition - A Comparative Study of Stride Style and Scale Usage in the Jazz Pianism of Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson

본 연구는 아트 테이텀과 오스카 피터슨의 'Body and Soul' 연주를 중심으로 스트라이드 스타일과 스케일 어법의 사용 양상을 비교·분석한 것이다. 두 연주자는 동일한 곡을 바탕으로 하였음에도 선율 구성, 리듬 전개, 즉흥 연주 방식에서 뚜렷한 차이를 보인다. 테이텀은 전통적 스트라이드 양식을 기반으로 하여 32분음표 스케일 패시지, 더블 타임, even 8ths 리듬의 활용 등을 통해 표현의 폭을 확장하였으며, 피터슨은 패턴화된 패시지와 셔플 리듬, 스트라이드 스타일 내의 왼손 보이싱 변화를 통해 자신만의 해석을 제시하였다. 이를 통해 재즈 피아니즘이 고정된 양식이 아닌, 연주자의 해석과 미학에 따라 다양하게 구성됨을 밝히고자 한다.

This study compares and analyzes the usage patterns of stride style and scale-based techniques in Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson’s performances of Body and Soul. Although both pianists base their interpretations on the same tune, they exhibit clear differences in melodic construction, rhythmic development, and improvisational approach. Tatum expands the expressive range of traditional stride style by utilizing thirty-second note scale passages, double-time, and even 8ths rhythm. In contrast, Peterson presents his own interpretation through patterned passages, shuffle rhythms, and changes in left-hand voicing within the stride style. Through this, the study aims to reveal that jazz pianism is not a fixed form, but one that can be flexibly structured according to each performer’s interpretation and aesthetics.
