A Study on Furniture Design Visualizing the Ebonizing Process through Interaction with Viewers

Traditionally, craft techniques have been experienced primarily by the maker and regarded merely as means to complete an artwork. In contemporary practice, however, the role of technique has expanded beyond execution, serving as a medium that conveys the work’s context and intent while engaging the viewer. This study focuses on the woodworking technique of ebonizing, reconfiguring it from a simple surface finish into an interactive device through which viewers can directly experience material transformation. By visualizing the traces and mechanisms resulting from chemical reactions between oxidized metal and wood, the research aims to reveal the narrative inherent in the materials and provide an environment for experiencing non-material concepts such as temporality and motion. Through four types of works, viewers physically engage with the pieces and discover hidden meanings beyond familiar phenomena. Future research will explore a wider range of materials and techniques, further extending the structures and methods of viewer-artwork interaction. By reconsidering the relationships among materials, techniques, and viewers, this study seeks to offer fresh perspectives on craft discourse and lay the foundation for a reflective, conceptually rich form of art.
