A study on the Emotional Expression through Puzzle-Type Furniture

This study explores how furniture design utilizing puzzle structures can elicit human emotional expression and foster emotional interaction. In contemporary society, furniture has evolved beyond its functional role to serve as a medium for psychological stability and empathy. A puzzle structure, through the combination and separation of its pieces, possesses the potential to visually symbolize fragmented emotions, deficiency, and recovery. The research reviews prior studies on emotion-based design, formative furniture, and the visualization of emotions, and analyzes domestic and international furniture design cases applying puzzle structures. The analysis focuses on how form, color, material, and user participation influence emotional communication. As a result, puzzle-type furniture has been found to enable not only visual formality but also active emotional experiences through user engagement, suggesting the conceptual expansion of emotion-based furniture design. This study holds significance as foundational data for future applications in emotional design practice, as well as in therapeutic and participatory space design.
