This study aims to analyze public interest and perception regarding appetite suppressants in South Korea, where the misuse and illegal distribution of narcotic appetite suppressants have become a social issue, and attention to GLP-1- based obesity treatments (e.g., Saxenda, Wegovy) is increasing. Using search volume analysis via Google Trends and Naver Datalab, along with text mining of news articles through BigKinds, we examined data from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2024. Results show that searches for keywords such as “Nabiyak,” “Dietamin,” and “appetite suppressant” surged during TV programs and criminal incidents. Notably, regions with the highest subregional search volume (top 1, over 85%) were closely related to high drug crime rates or incidents. After the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety released reporting guidelines in December 2023, keywords like “Telegram,” “Twitter,” and “Nabiyak” disappeared from news articles, indicating the policy’s effectiveness. Internationally, Korea showed higher interest in Wegovy than France or Japan before and after its release. Unique patterns included frequent appearance of practical usage-related terms and “telemedicine” as a related search. Comparisons with other drugs were limited. These findings suggest the need for similar media guidelines for GLP-1 treatments to prevent misuse and promote proper drug use.
