김영 묘지는 당의 신라 질자 묘지 중 과학적 발굴을 거친 첫 번째 묘지이다. 김영은 신라 성덕왕 김흥광의 사촌형인 김의양의 손자이다. 그의 가족은 당에서 3대에 걸쳐 질자 신분으로 숙위하여 관직을 받았고, 두 번이나 당이 신라에 보낸 사신의 부사가 되어 弔祭와 책봉에 참여했다. 이 지석의 내용과 관련된 묘지, 문헌 기록을 결합해서 살펴보면 당과 신라와의 관계 연구를 심화할 수 있으며, 당대 종주국과 번국과의 관계와 정치･문화 교류 연구에 중요한 가치를 지닌다.
The epitaph of Kim Yeong constitutes the first scientifically excavated tomb inscription of a Silla Kingdom royal family member who served as a hostage in Tang China. Kim Yeong was the grandson of Kim Uiyang, a paternal cousin of King Seongdeok (Kim Heungguang) of the Silla Kingdom. For three generations, his family remained in the Tang realm as imperial guard hostages, receiving official appointments. Kim Yeong himself was twice dispatched as a deputy envoy to the Silla Kingdom, participating in missions related to royal mourning and investiture ceremonies. By analyzing the content of this epitaph alongside other inscriptions and historical records, this study contributes significantly to our understanding of Tang－Silla diplomatic relations and offers important insights into the suzerain-vassal relationship and the political and cultural interactions during the Tang Dynasty.
