Ontological Metaphors in Arabic : Focusing on the Qur’ānic Verses

This study examined ontological metaphors, a subtype of conceptual metaphors, in Arabic with particular reference to Qur’ānic verses. By framing abstract entities through concrete objects, ontological metaphors play a significant role in Qur’ānic discourse. The analysis identifies the CONTAINER metaphor and personification as especially prevalent, showing how they structure cognitive frameworks and preserve cultural values within Arabic-speaking communities. The findings further demonstrate the value of conceptual metaphor theory as a lens for interpreting Qur’ānic expressions, thereby advancing the application of cognitive linguistics in Arabic and Islamic studies.
