This study aims to examine the forms of religious violence faced by religious minorities in Iraqi novels in the wake of the rise of extremist forces. To this end, the study analyzes Sinan Antoon’s Ya Maryam and Warid Badr al-Salim’s The Virgin of Sinjar, focusing on how Christian and Yazidi communities—who constitute minority groups within Iraqi society—experience suffering under religious persecution and violence. Each novel realistically depicts the brutal realities of religious violence these groups face in a society dominated by Islamic extremism, including abduction, forced conversions, death threats, terrorism, and sexual enslavement. Furthermore, they narratively convey the psychological pain and trauma resulting from such violence.
