Intertextuality in the Arabic Translation of Squid Game Season 2: An Analysis of Subtitling and Dubbing

This study analyzes the intertextuality in the Arabic subtitling and dubbing of Squid Game Season 2. It investigates whether the intertextuality present in the original Korean dialogue was preserved or lost in translation, and explores translation strategies or alternative texts that could help maintain it. The analysis draws on Venuti’s theory and examines Netflix's translation guidelines. The findings indicate that the translated cases fall into three categories: those in which intertextuality is preserved, those in which it is lost, and those in which its translation depends on the viewer’s background knowledge. In the case of dubbing, constraints such as lip-sync requirements led to abbreviations or mistranslations, resulting in decontextualization.
