아리스토텔레스의 플롯 유형 분류에 대한 통합적 해석 - 급전과 발견을 중심으로

An Integrative Interpretation of Aristotle’s Classification of Plot Types : Focusing on peripeteia and anagnōrisis

본고는 아리스토텔레스 『시학』의 10장과 14장에 제시된 플롯 분류 방 식이 상호 어떻게 조응하며, 14장에서 제시된 네 가지 플롯 유형 사이의 우 열관계가 어떤 기준에 의해 형성되는지를 검토한다. 이를 위해 10장의 급전 과 발견 개념을 중심으로 단순·복합 플롯의 구분을 정리하고, 14장의 네 가 지 플롯이 이러한 구분을 계승하면서 비극적 사건의 인지와 실행 여부에 따 라 세분화되는 구조를 분석한다. 나아가 각 플롯 유형에 대한 우열 판단이 단 순히 급전과 발견의 양적 포함 정도뿐 아니라, 인간 주체의 인식과 행위 선 택 가능성이라는 윤리적 함의를 내포할 수 있음을 주장한다. 특히 플롯 ④의 우수성은 급전과 발견을 모두 포함하는 구조적 완성도에 더해, 자기 인식을 통한 행위 전환이라는 실천적 지혜의 이상과도 긴밀히 연결된다. 본고는 이 러한 분석을 통해 『시학』의 플롯 이론이 단순한 극적 장치의 분류를 넘어서, 비극적 인간 존재에 대한 형이상학적·윤리적 통찰을 담고 있음을 밝히고자 한다.

This paper investigates how the two classification systems of plot in Aristotle’s Poetics—found respectively in Chapters 10 and 14—relate to each other, and on what grounds the hierarchy among the four types of plot in Chapter 14 is established. Focusing on the notions of peripeteia and anagnōrisis, the study argues that the fourfold division in Chapter 14 further elaborates the simple-complex plot distinction from Chapter 10 by incorporating epistemic and volitional dimensions of tragic action. Moreover, the evaluative ranking among the plot types is shown to depend not merely on the inclusion of reversal and recognition as structural elements, but also on their ethical implications concerning human agency and the capacity for reflective change. In particular, Plot Type ④ is regarded as superior not only because it contains both reversal and recognition, but because it embodies the ideal of practical wisdom—phrónēsis—through its dramatization of moral transformation based on self-awareness. Through this interpretation, the paper demonstrates that Aristotle’s theory of plot offers more than a formal taxonomy; it conveys a metaphysical and ethical understanding of tragic human experience.
