An Evaluation of Test for English Majors-Band 8 (TEM8) in Mainland China

TEM8 is a proficiency test designed specifically for English majors, assessing listening, reading, proofreading and error correction, translation, and writing skills. This study begins with a literature review on the purposes of language testing, reliability, validity, washback, and the historical eras of language testing. Then, it places TEM8 in context by describing its candidates, test structure, rating scales, development, and preparation strategies. The evaluation section analyzes TEM8 in terms of reliability, validity, practicality, and impact, and proposed some improvement suggestions, including optimizing the examination environment, adjusting examination arrangements, etc., to enhance the overall quality of TEM8.
