역사 서사의 ‘다시쓰기’ 관점에서의 《列女傳·孽嬖傳》 讀解

A Reading of “Niebi zhuan” (Lienüzhuan) from the Perspective of “Rewriting” in Historical Narrative

본고는 劉向(B.C. 77- B.C. 6)이 편찬한 《列女傳》 7卷 중 <孽嬖傳>의 ‘다시쓰기’ 양상을 분석하고 그 의미를 해석하는 것을 주요 목적으로 한다. 선행 문헌의 역사 서사와 <얼폐전>의 傳記를 대상으로 서사 구도, 인물 역할과 관계의 力學을 비교, 분석하여 다시쓰기가 생성한 새로운 의미를 해석하되, 특히 性別的 측면에 집중하였다. <孽嬖傳>은 고대 역사 서사의 원리 중 하나인 ‘報’의 법칙을 性別과 결합하여 이른바 ‘性別化된 因果律’을 가장 중요한 서사 원리로 운용한다. 그 결과 기존의 역사서술은 여성의 부적절한 욕망과 행위가 재앙을 가져오게 된다는 기승전결의 서사로 재구성되었고, 여성은 서사의 인과 관계를 완성하기 위한 필수 요소가 되었다. 그리하여 서사의 인과성과 선형성이 뚜렷해짐과 동시에 여성 인물의 서사 주도권이 강화되었다. 하지만 등장인물이 재현을 통해 만들어 낸 ‘이야기’와 화자의 ‘평가’는 종종 긴장 관계를 형성하며 서사 층위와 담화 층위의 부조화를 보여준다. 이러한 경계와 균열을 의식할 때 비로소 <얼폐전>에 대한 새로운 독해가 가능해질 것이다.

This study aims to analyze the “rewriting” aspects of “Niebi zhuan”(孽嬖傳, Biographies of Illegitimate and Favored Consorts), one of the seven fascicles in Lienüzhuan (列女傳, Biographies of Exemplary Women) compiled by Liu Xiang (劉向, 77-6 BCE), and to interpret its significance. Focusing on the narrative structures, character functions, and the dynamics of interpersonal relations, this paper compares and examines “Niebi zhuan” alongside the historical narratives of preceding texts, with particular attention to their gendered implications. “Niebi zhuan” deploys a gendered causality as its core narrative principle by merging the classical historiographical law of “recompense” (報) with sexual difference. As a result, earlier historical records are reconfigured into linear narratives in which women’s inappropriate desires and actions inevitably bring about disaster. In this process, female figures emerge as indispensable agents for completing the causal chain of the narrative, thereby intensifying both the causality and linearity of the storyline while simultaneously amplifying the narrative agency of women. However, the interplay between the “stories” created through the representation of female figures and the narrator’s evaluative commentary often reveals tensions and dissonances between the narrative and discursive levels. It is precisely in these boundaries and fissures that a new reading of “Niebi zhuan” becomes possible.
