Mathematical Modelling with Generative Artificial Intelligence: Insights from Korean Middle School Students' Practices

This exploratory study examines how students use generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in solving a mathematical modelling task. It involved individual interviews with four Korean middle school students, using a modelling task that is contextually relevant to Korea. The students demonstrated individual modelling routes in the process of solving the task with genAI. Their modelling processes could be categorized based on whether they used digital tools during the working mathematically stage. Students used genAI in two distinct ways while solving the task: (1) genAI as a tool for making assumptions in estimations and measurements, and (2) genAI as a tool for carrying out mathematical calculations. The findings of this study provide a foundation for further research on the use of genAI such as ChatGPT in mathematical modelling. Future studies could fruitfully examine students' modelling processes and the specific types of prompts they use when engaging with genAI to solve modelling tasks.
