In 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. The explosions of these two atomic bombs aroused widespread concern and multi-faceted discussions in China, and various domestic newspapers and periodicals reported this event. The large-scale and high-frequency reports in the Kuomintang newspapers highlighted its emphasis on nuclear military technologies such as atomic bombs. the reports of the Communist Party of China’s party newspaper Liberation Daily tended to be objective, emphasizing the main role of the people’s war and embodying the dialectical Marxist view of history. Social newspapers and periodicals showed the complex attitude of Chinese society towards the atomic bomb. There was both admiration for science and technology, criticism of weapons and wars, and the pursuit of scientific understanding. These reports reveal the understanding and thinking of Chinese society on the atomic bomb from multiple perspectives at that time, and reflect the attitudes of political parties and the public towards the acceptance and criticism of new things under different factors.
